Campfire cuisine: Awaken to bacon … and eggs
Brisk mornings while camping can be taken to a whole new level of exhilarating with just three simple ingredients: bacon, eggs and a well-built campfire.
To be technical, you’ll need a few other items to seal the deal. A cooking rack such as the one shown in the photo above is essential for campfire cuisine happiness. And a good pan for your eggs doesn’t hurt, either. A griddle, wok or other treated cooking surface would also work.
What makes this traditional breakfast such a hit every time we camp is how simple it is to make — much simpler than it is at home. That’s because bacon can be a hassle to make on the stovetop. At camp? Simply lay some strips on your rack over a stoked fire, and you’ll be sizzling your way to breakfast bliss. Be sure to turn the slices regularly to avoid burning. The grease helps fuel the fire, which makes your eggs cook quicker, too.
Eggs can be done similarly to how they are at home. Over-easy, dippy, scrambled or however. Be sure to use some variation of cooking oil, butter or other substance to reducing sticking.
You can top off the breakfast with super-easy campfire toast. Simply lay a few piece of bread on the rack over the fire and turn regularly. It only takes a few minutes if your fire is throwing off the proper amount of heat … quicker than most people’s toasters can operate.
Cleanup is then left to just the pan, and if you oil it well beforehand can keep turning/scrambling the eggs, you should have minimal cleanup in that regard, too.
